Established 1938 by a Scotsman, which may seem surprising given that Meribel is a ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley within the French Alps, it has gone on to become the large skiing complex that it is today. No doubt a feat that Colonel Peter Lindsay, its founder, may not have envisioned back then when he felt the need to seek out a new site for winter sport, apart from the already established resorts in Austria and Germany. Of course there is more to it than simply building a ski run. In order to turn the area into a resort, the Colonel started up a property business that would lead to the funding required for the ski run itself. In 1939 the building of the first three chalets was under way there, postponed because of the second world war, but since then they have continued to be developed and now for a luxury ski chalet Meribel certainly is competitive. The good thing about the buildings in this beautiful hamlet, is that they are designed in keeping with the mountain location that surrounds them.
